Steve Cook was born in Sacramento,
California and began studying guitar at age 10 with Tom
Phillips, a guitarist with a local band called The New Breed.
Bassist Timothy B. Schmidt had a strong influence on Steve's
decision to make the transition to the electric bass.
Later, Steve joined the jazz fusion project Symposium (see
Island Breeze audio sample below), which performed original
music with jazz, funk, and Latin elements. Symposium
opened for acts such as Richard Elliot, Herbie Hancock, Wayne
Shorter, Tony Dumas, Tony Williams, and others.

In the spring of 2006 and
2007, Steve worked
with the "Jazz to Blues" project in Lincoln County, Oregon to
help introduce improvisation skills to middle and high school
students, and other local musicians wanting to learn
improvisation. Steve anchors Perpetua on bass, as well as
adding guitar and contributing original compositions. He
continues to teach and work with his son Brandon (saxophone) on
original compositions for future recordings. |
